The Nigeria Police Force is set to arraign Adeniyi Adeyemi, the alleged Director-General of the non-existent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday over allegations of forgery, impersonation and related offences. According to court documents, Adeyemi and two other defendants face an eight-count charge filed by police prosecutor Wisdom Madaki. The case was previously adjourned after Adeyemi was reported to be ill when he was due to take his plea.
The prosecution has listed several high-profile witnesses, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside officials from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), police personnel and other individuals allegedly connected to the operation of the fictitious agency. The police also intend to tender documentary evidence, including the investigation report, Gbajabiamila’s petition, an alleged forged presidential appointment letter, requests for diplomatic recognition, approvals to open Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) accounts and documents relating to the establishment of the PFIPC.
Investigators allege that Adeyemi operated the fake agency from the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja, using forged government documents to obtain office space, banking approvals and official recognition. Following the exposure of the scheme, President Bola Tinubu directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the fictitious agency. The outcome of Tuesday’s arraignment is expected to mark a significant step in one of Nigeria’s most high-profile public sector fraud cases this year.
