The United Kingdom has reaffirmed the list of countries whose nationals must obtain a visa before travelling for visits of up to six months, under its updated Immigration Rules. The list includes Nigeria, alongside more than 100 other countries and territories whose citizens are required to secure entry clearance before travelling to the UK, even for short-term visits such as tourism, business meetings, medical treatment or family visits.
The updated list includes countries such as Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Belarus, Benin, Cameroon, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, Yemen and Zimbabwe, among others. The UK Government noted that nationals of these countries must obtain a Standard Visitor Visa before travelling, regardless of whether their intended stay is less than six months.
The UK also clarified that travellers from countries not on the visa-national list may instead require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling for short visits, depending on their nationality. The updated guidance forms part of the UK’s ongoing efforts to strengthen border controls while maintaining separate entry requirements for visa nationals and ETA-eligible visitors.
