Tokyo police have arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian, identified as Nwadiukwu Ikenna, on suspicion of persistently touting for a nightlife establishment in Kabukicho, Tokyo’s popular entertainment district. Authorities alleged that Ikenna repeatedly approached passersby and directed them to a specific restaurant, despite Japan’s strict laws prohibiting aggressive street solicitation in designated areas.
According to investigators, Ikenna admitted to the allegation, telling police that he received a commission from customers he referred to the establishment. Japanese authorities said the arrest forms part of an intensified crackdown on illegal touting in Kabukicho following a rise in complaints from foreign tourists, many of whom reported being lured into venues where they were charged excessive fees. Police said such complaints have resulted in financial losses estimated at more than 100 million yen.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have pledged to continue strict enforcement against illegal solicitation in the district to protect both residents and visitors. If convicted, Ikenna could face penalties under Japan’s anti-touting regulations, as authorities continue efforts to curb scams and improve safety in one of the city’s busiest nightlife hubs.
