The Abia State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber identified as Monday Chukwudi, following an intelligence-led operation in Umuahia. According to the command, the suspect is believed to be a member of a robbery gang that has been linked to several attacks on residents within the state. Police said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety across Abia.
Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka said officers recovered a locally made pistol, live ammunition and other items believed to have been used in criminal activities during the operation. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and his accomplices allegedly specialised in robbing residents of cash, mobile phones and other valuables. The command added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who remain at large.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling violent crime and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies. He assured the public that the suspect will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations, while the search for fleeing accomplices continues.
