The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that the private Bombardier Challenger 601-3A aircraft that mistakenly landed on a road under construction near Asaba Airport had first aborted its initial landing attempt before making a second approach that ended on the wrong surface. The aircraft, operated by VMO Aero Limited, was flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Asaba on June 10, 2026, with seven people on board—four crew members and three passengers. No injuries were recorded.
According to the NSIB’s preliminary report, the flight crew said the aircraft’s navigation system indicated it was correctly aligned with the published RNAV Runway 11 approach. However, the aircraft touched down on a paved road under construction near the airport instead of the designated runway. The Bureau has recovered and downloaded the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and is analysing them alongside air traffic control recordings, witness statements and other operational data to determine exactly what happened.
The NSIB stressed that the report is preliminary and does not assign blame or determine the probable cause of the incident. It said a final report containing detailed findings, conclusions and any additional safety recommendations will be released after the investigation is completed in line with international aviation standards.
