\n\nThe Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh flood warning, urging residents in 27 states, including Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Oyo, Ogun, Borno, and Cross River, to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall continues across the country.
According to the agency, persistent downpours have left the ground saturated, increasing the likelihood of flash floods in low-lying communities, urban centres, and areas with poor drainage systems. NiMet warned that flooding could disrupt transportation, damage homes and businesses, and temporarily affect electricity and telecommunications services if rainfall intensifies.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has advised residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations where necessary and avoid driving or walking through flooded roads. Authorities stressed that even shallow floodwaters can be dangerous due to strong currents and hidden hazards beneath the water.
Residents have also been encouraged to clear blocked drainage channels around homes, markets, and public buildings to allow rainwater to flow freely. Emergency management agencies across the affected states have been placed on alert to respond quickly to any incidents that may arise during the peak of the rainy season.
The warning comes as Nigeria enters the height of its annual rainy season, a period that has historically resulted in severe flooding in several parts of the country. Experts have urged citizens to closely monitor official weather updates, prepare emergency plans, and strictly follow safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
With forecasts indicating that heavy rainfall may continue in the coming days, the Federal Government is calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to minimize the risk of loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
