The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has urged the Federal Government to establish a special intervention programme for victims of terrorism following the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. In an open letter signed by its Coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah, the student body commended President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, and security agencies for securing the victims’ release after 56 days in captivity, describing the operation as a major victory against terrorism.
NANS argued that while government programmes exist for the rehabilitation and reintegration of repentant insurgents, innocent victims of terrorism deserve equal or greater support. The association called for a comprehensive intervention package that includes psychological counselling, free medical care, educational scholarships, academic rehabilitation, economic assistance for affected families, and long-term monitoring to help victims fully recover from the trauma of their ordeal.
The association also praised the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security agencies for their coordinated rescue efforts. NANS said the successful operation should serve as a strong warning to terrorists and kidnappers, reaffirming its commitment to partnering with government and other stakeholders to promote security awareness, youth engagement and peaceful coexistence across the country.
