The pupils and teachers abducted by suspected terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity. The development was announced on Friday by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that the victims were successfully rescued through the coordinated efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies.
According to the Presidency, the rescue operation was carried out without the payment of any ransom or concession to the kidnappers. Authorities disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while several others were neutralised during the operation. The abductors had reportedly demanded the release of detained terrorist commanders, but the Federal Government refused to negotiate with them.
President Bola Tinubu commended the military, intelligence agencies and other security personnel for securing the victims’ release, describing the operation as a major victory against terrorism and kidnapping. The successful rescue has brought relief to families and residents after weeks of anxiety, with the government reaffirming its commitment to protecting schools, dismantling terrorist networks and ensuring those responsible face justice.
