\n\nThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended Nigeria’s ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks, giving eligible citizens more time to register ahead of future elections.
The electoral commission announced that the exercise, which was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now continue until July 24, 2026. According to INEC, the decision followed extensive consultations with political parties, civil society organizations, election observers, and members of the public who requested more time for registration.
INEC explained that the extension is aimed at ensuring that every eligible Nigerian who is yet to register has a fair opportunity to do so. The commission noted that the registration process has witnessed a steady turnout across the country, with many first-time voters, young Nigerians, and citizens seeking to transfer or update their voter information participating in the exercise.
The commission urged prospective voters not to wait until the final days before visiting registration centres, warning that last-minute rushes could lead to long queues and unnecessary delays. It also encouraged Nigerians to use the official online pre-registration portal where applicable before completing the process physically at designated registration centers .
Political stakeholders have welcomed the extension, describing it as a positive step toward promoting greater electoral participation and inclusiveness. They expressed hope that the additional time will enable more eligible citizens, particularly those in rural communities and densely populated urban areas, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
With preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gathering momentum, INEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process. The commission also advised Nigerians to ignore misinformation regarding the registration exercise and rely only on official announcements for updates.
