UK Unveils New Digital Economy Partnership with Nigeria

UK Unveils New Digital Economy Partnership with Nigeria
\n\nThe United Kingdom has announced a new initiative to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria’s rapidly growing digital economy through a series of reforms and investment programmes aimed at expanding internet access, improving digital infrastructure, and encouraging innovation.

According to the British High Commission, the initiative is being implemented under the UK’s Digital Access Programme and will support state-level policy reforms designed to improve broadband connectivity, strengthen regulatory institutions, and attract more private investment into Nigeria’s technology sector.

The programme will also provide technical assistance to improve digital inclusion, particularly in underserved communities where internet access remains limited. Officials say the partnership is expected to help create a more enabling environment for technology businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs while supporting economic growth and job creation.

British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter stated that the UK remains committed to working with Nigeria to build an inclusive and innovative digital economy. Nigerian officials also welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward accelerating digital transformation across the country.

Industry experts believe improved broadband infrastructure and stronger digital policies could boost e-commerce, financial technology, education, healthcare, and other sectors that increasingly rely on digital services. They also note that greater investment in digital infrastructure could enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness as one of Africa’s leading technology hubs.

The announcement further highlights the growing economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with both countries seeking to deepen collaboration in technology, innovation, and sustainable digital development.
