The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of four senior police officers and imposed disciplinary sanctions on 31 others following findings of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts considered unbecoming of public officers. The decision was reached during the Commission’s plenary meeting in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen discipline, accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the PSC, 10 senior officers were demoted, including three Superintendents of Police reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police, and five Assistant Superintendents of Police reduced to the rank of Inspector. The Commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest, issued severe reprimands to 10 officers, reprimands to five, warning letters to three, and a letter of advice to one officer. Meanwhile, seven officers were cleared after investigations found no evidence of wrongdoing.
PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reaffirmed the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, stating that misconduct by police personnel would continue to attract appropriate sanctions. He added that while the Commission remains committed to enforcing discipline, it will also continue to recognise and reward officers who demonstrate diligence, professionalism and exemplary service.
