The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has accused former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of abusing the terms of a court-approved medical visit while in custody. According to the anti-graft agency, the visit, which was authorised to allow El-Rufai receive medical attention, was allegedly used for activities beyond the scope permitted by the court.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ICPC said El-Rufai had requested to see his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, after declining to attend scheduled court proceedings. The Commission said it facilitated the visit to the private wing of the National Hospital, Abuja, under security supervision. However, it alleged that photographs later posted online by one of El-Rufai’s associates showed meetings involving political associates during the medical consultation, which it described as a violation of the court order.
The ICPC further announced the arrest of Professor Bello Abubakar, alleging that he made false statements during the process. The agency stated that the doctor is being investigated and warned that it would no longer tolerate what it described as the abuse of professional courtesies extended to suspects in its custody. The Commission also said it intends to bring the alleged breach of the court’s directives to the attention of the court.
The development marks the latest twist in the ongoing legal battle involving El-Rufai, who is facing corruption-related charges. The former governor and his associates have previously accused the ICPC of restricting his access to medical care and family members while in detention, allegations the Commission has repeatedly denied.
