The Federal Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the implementation and enforcement of newly introduced regulations affecting internet platforms, online intermediaries, and other cross-cutting digital economy issues. The directive was issued by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, pending the development of a harmonised national policy framework to better coordinate digital regulation across government agencies.
According to the ministry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have been instructed to maintain the existing regulatory framework while ongoing policy harmonisation is completed. The government clarified that the suspension applies only to new or recently introduced regulations under review and does not affect the statutory responsibilities or existing enforceable regulations of the three agencies.
To support the process, the ministry has established a joint technical coordination committee comprising representatives of the NCC, NITDA and NDPC. The committee will engage stakeholders and develop a unified governance framework aimed at reducing regulatory overlap, improving investor confidence, promoting innovation and strengthening Nigeria’s ambition of becoming Africa’s leading digital economy. The directive comes amid increasing efforts by the Federal Government to improve oversight of digital platforms while ensuring a predictable and coordinated regulatory environment.
