Officials explained that the integration programme will allow government institutions to securely verify citizens’ identities using a unified digital identity system. The project is expected to enhance the delivery of services such as banking, healthcare, education, telecommunications, pensions, taxation, and social intervention programmes.
According to the Director-General of NIMC, the digital identity initiative is a critical component of Nigeria’s digital economy strategy. He stated that a reliable national identity database will make it easier for government agencies to identify eligible beneficiaries for various programmes, eliminate fraudulent registrations, and improve planning based on accurate demographic information.
The Commission disclosed that millions of Nigerians have already enrolled for the National Identification Number, with registration centres continuing to operate across the country. Citizens who have not yet obtained their NIN were encouraged to do so, as the number will remain an important requirement for accessing several public and private sector services.
Experts in digital governance believe the initiative could significantly improve efficiency in public administration. They argue that a unified identity system will reduce paperwork, minimise bureaucratic delays, and enable institutions to provide faster and more transparent services. Financial institutions are also expected to benefit from easier customer verification processes, helping to strengthen efforts against financial crimes and identity theft.
However, some civil society organisations have urged the government to prioritise data protection and cybersecurity as the programme expands. They stressed that while digital identity systems offer numerous advantages, citizens’ personal information must be adequately protected from unauthorised access and cyber threats.
Technology analysts also called for increased investment in digital infrastructure, especially in rural communities where internet access and enrolment centres remain limited. They noted that ensuring nationwide accessibility will be essential to achieving the programme’s long-term objectives.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure and inclusive digital identity ecosystem that supports economic development and improves access to essential public services.
