The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Oyo State has called on both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to seek God’s wisdom in efforts to rescue more than 40 schoolchildren and their teachers abducted during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. Speaking at a book launch in Ibadan, the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Olukayode Ogundiya, said Nigeria’s leaders should rely not only on human expertise but also on divine guidance in tackling the country’s worsening security challenges.
Ogundiya announced that CAN would hold a special one-day prayer programme on July 11 to seek divine intervention for the safe release of the victims. He stressed that the nation urgently needs leaders who govern with the fear of God, arguing that many of Nigeria’s current challenges stem from overreliance on human wisdom instead of seeking God’s direction. He urged political leaders at all levels to embrace godly leadership in addressing insecurity and other national issues.
The appeal comes as concern continues to grow over the prolonged captivity of the abducted pupils and teachers. Religious leaders, civil society groups and lawmakers have repeatedly urged the government to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the victims are returned safely to their families, while security agencies continue operations aimed at securing their release.
