\n\nThe Federal Government has rejected claims that more than ₦8 trillion was spent outside Nigeria’s approved 2026 budget, describing the allegation as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the government explained that all federal expenditures are carried out through constitutionally approved Appropriation Acts, Supplementary Appropriation Acts, and other legal financial frameworks. Officials stressed that Nigeria does not operate any “shadow budget” and insisted that every public expenditure follows due process.
The clarification followed public debate surrounding observations linked to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 2026 Article IV Consultation Report. According to the ministry, some of the figures being circulated were based on a misunderstanding of multi-year capital projects, which are legally allowed to continue across different budget cycles.
The government further assured Nigerians that transparency and accountability remain priorities in the management of public finances while reiterating its commitment to economic reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s economy.
As discussions continue, analysts say the controversy highlights the importance of clearer communication on government spending and fiscal reporting.
