A 23-year-old Nigerian final-year medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after succumbing to injuries she sustained during a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Adaobi passed away in a hospital in Germany on July 5, several days after she was critically injured in the attack while preparing to celebrate her graduation from Kharkiv National Medical University.
According to reports, Adaobi enrolled at the university in 2020 and had successfully completed her medical studies in 2026. She had also participated in international medical programmes, including internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in 2025. She was travelling with a fellow medical student to a graduation photoshoot when the Russian strike hit. While her companion died at the scene, Adaobi was evacuated for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts to save her.
Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fellow students, the university community and Nigerians at home and abroad. Kharkiv National Medical University described her as a brilliant, compassionate and hardworking future doctor whose life and career were tragically cut short. The incident underscores the continuing human cost of the war in Ukraine, which continues to claim civilian lives, including those of international students caught in the conflict.
