The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the payment of ₦39.6 billion in outstanding pension increase arrears owed to retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme. Speaking shortly after the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) and the Federal Ministry of Finance announced the disbursement, NUP National President Godwin Abumisi described the payment as a major step toward improving the welfare of retired public servants.
Abumisi said the payment complements other pension-related interventions by the current administration, including the release of ₦758 billion for pension and gratuity arrears under the Contributory Pension Scheme and ₦58 billion for arrears owed to retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme. He added that pensioners have experienced more consistent monthly pension payments since Tinubu assumed office, expressing optimism that the government would continue implementing reforms to strengthen the country’s pension system.
While thanking the President for the latest payment, the pensioners’ leader urged the government to sustain its commitment to retirees’ welfare by ensuring prompt pension payments and clearing any remaining outstanding liabilities. He also encouraged pensioners to continue supporting policies aimed at improving the welfare of elderly Nigerians.
