\n\nRetirees across Nigeria have continued to express gratitude following the Federal Government’s payment of ₦39.63 billion in outstanding pension arrears to thousands of beneficiaries under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
Pensioners described the payment as a welcome relief after years of waiting, saying the funds would help them meet pressing financial obligations, including healthcare expenses, housing costs, and family responsibilities. Many also praised the government for fulfilling what they described as a long-standing commitment to retired public servants.
Officials explained that the payment covers verified arrears owed to thousands of pensioners whose entitlements had remained outstanding. The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) stated that the disbursement forms part of ongoing efforts to improve pension administration and ensure retirees receive their benefits more efficiently.
Pension advocacy groups welcomed the development but stressed that timely and consistent pension payments should become the norm rather than an exception. They argued that senior citizens who spent decades serving the nation deserve financial security and dignity in retirement.
Economic analysts also noted that the release of billions of naira into the hands of retirees could stimulate local economic activity, as beneficiaries spend on food, healthcare, transportation, and other essential services within their communities.
While many pensioners celebrated the development, some stakeholders urged the government to continue addressing other outstanding pension obligations and strengthen reforms aimed at preventing future payment delays.
The latest disbursement has renewed hope among retired workers that sustained reforms will create a more efficient pension system capable of guaranteeing financial stability for present and future retirees.
