Residents across several parts of Lagos State are counting significant losses after days of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding that submerged homes, stranded commuters, damaged businesses and left many vehicles abandoned on waterlogged roads. Entire streets became impassable as floodwaters overwhelmed drainage systems, forcing workers to abandon their journeys and shop owners to watch helplessly as water destroyed goods and property.
Many affected residents said they suffered extensive damage to household items, electronics, furniture and vehicles, while business owners reported financial losses after floodwaters inundated shops and disrupted commercial activities. Motorists also lamented the cost of repairing vehicles that broke down after attempting to drive through flooded roads. Residents renewed calls on the Lagos State Government to improve drainage infrastructure, clear blocked waterways and implement more effective flood-control measures to reduce the impact of recurring floods during the rainy season.
Experts have attributed the persistent flooding to a combination of intense rainfall, blocked drainage channels, rapid urbanisation and inadequate waste disposal, warning that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of such events across West Africa. They urged authorities to strengthen flood mitigation strategies while encouraging residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage systems, which contributes significantly to urban flooding.
