The commission also unveiled a new self-service online registration platform, a move expected to make voter registration faster and more accessible for first-time voters.
Originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, the exercise will now continue until July 24, 2026, following feedback from political parties, civil society organizations, election observers, and members of the public. According to INEC, the extension is intended to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to be included in the national register of voters.
In addition to the extension, the commission revealed that beginning July 8, eligible citizens will be able to initiate their registration online through a dedicated self-service portal. The platform will guide users through the registration process before completing the required biometric verification. INEC says the innovation is part of its broader effort to modernize Nigeria’s electoral process while reducing overcrowding at registration centres.
Election observers have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive step toward improving voter participation. They noted that many Nigerians, especially young people, had expressed concerns about long queues, limited registration centres, and time constraints.
Political analysts believe the extension could increase the number of registered voters significantly, particularly among first-time voters who recently became eligible. However, they also urged INEC to ensure the online system remains secure, reliable, and protected against fraud.
The electoral commission has encouraged Nigerians who are yet to register not to wait until the final days of the exercise. Citizens are also advised to verify their information carefully and complete every stage of the registration process before the new deadline.
