Federal Government Pays ₦39.6 Billion Pension Arrears, Bringing Relief to More Than 24,000 Retirees
\n\nThousands of retired public servants across Nigeria have begun receiving long-awaited financial relief after the Federal Government approved and disbursed ₦39.63 billion in outstanding pension arrears under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS). The payment, which covers more than 24,800 pensioners, has been widely welcomed by retirees and pension advocacy groups.

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) confirmed that the funds were released following a directive from the Federal Ministry of Finance to settle verified outstanding liabilities that had accumulated over several years. Many beneficiaries had endured lengthy delays while awaiting their entitlements, with some describing the payments as a long-overdue reward for decades of public service.

Officials stated that the settlement forms part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s pension administration. They noted that clearing inherited arrears remains a priority as the government continues implementing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and transparency within the pension system.

For many retirees, the payment represents more than financial assistance. It provides an opportunity to address pressing medical needs, support family members, settle debts, and improve their standard of living after years of uncertainty.

Pension unions and advocacy organisations have praised the development while urging the government to maintain prompt and regular pension payments moving forward. They argued that retirees who dedicated decades of service to the nation deserve financial security and dignity in retirement.

Economic analysts also believe the injection of billions of naira into households could have a positive impact on local economies, as beneficiaries spend the funds on goods and services within their communities.

While many have welcomed the initiative, stakeholders continue to call for comprehensive pension reforms that will prevent future backlogs and ensure that every retiree receives benefits without unnecessary delays.
