EFCC Arraigns Siblings Over Alleged Multi-Million Naira Land Fraud in Abuja
\n\nThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned two siblings before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of involvement in a multi-million naira land fraud scheme.

According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants allegedly obtained large sums of money from unsuspecting buyers by making false representations regarding ownership and allocation of landed property. Prosecutors told the court that the suspects collected payments from several individuals despite allegedly lacking the legal authority to sell the properties in question.

The EFCC maintained that its investigation uncovered evidence suggesting the transactions caused significant financial losses to victims, many of whom invested their life savings in the disputed properties. The commission said the prosecution forms part of its ongoing campaign against financial crimes and fraudulent real estate transactions, which have become increasingly common across Nigeria.

During the court proceedings, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. The trial judge subsequently granted bail under conditions set by the court and adjourned the matter to a later date for the commencement of trial.

Legal practitioners say land-related disputes remain one of the most common sources of litigation in Nigeria, particularly in rapidly developing cities where demand for residential and commercial property continues to rise. They have advised prospective buyers to conduct thorough due diligence, verify land titles, and consult relevant government agencies before making payments.

The EFCC has also urged members of the public to report suspected cases of land fraud and other financial crimes, assuring Nigerians that investigations into fraudulent property transactions will continue.

As the trial progresses, many observers believe the outcome could further strengthen efforts to curb fraudulent practices in Nigeria’s real estate sector while promoting greater transparency and accountability. (Based on today’s EFCC court proceedings.)
