President Bola Tinubu has unveiled The Power Force, a new national programme that will train 5,000 young Nigerians as electricity meter installers and technicians to accelerate the rollout of smart meters, reduce estimated billing and create employment opportunities. The initiative, which will be implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is designed to close critical skills gaps in the power sector while strengthening electricity distribution across the country.
According to the President, the programme is open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Participants will receive hands-on technical training from the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), while certification will be overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA). Successful trainees will be linked to employment opportunities with electricity distribution companies, meter providers and other industry partners. The first phase of the programme will begin in Abuja this month before expanding to all six geopolitical zones.
Tinubu said the initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a practical pathway to job creation, youth empowerment and improved electricity services. He noted that wider metering will promote transparent billing, improve revenue collection, reduce losses in the power sector and ultimately lead to better service delivery for consumers. Applications for the first cohort will open on July 4, 2026, with the President encouraging eligible young Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity to gain skills and contribute to Nigeria’s power sector reforms.
