The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified that the Federal Government has not approved Adire as the new uniform for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The clarification came just hours after his earlier comments during a television interview sparked widespread reports that the iconic khaki uniform would be replaced with locally made Adire fabric.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Olawande explained that his reference to Adire and Ankara was only meant to illustrate some of the proposals being considered as part of the ongoing NYSC reform process. He stressed that no final decision has been taken on the fabric or design of any new uniform, adding that the government is evaluating options based on professionalism, national identity, durability, functionality and cost-effectiveness.

The minister urged Nigerians to focus on the broader objectives of the NYSC reforms, which include skills-based deployment, improved orientation programmes, enhanced employability, entrepreneurship development and stronger national integration. He assured the public that any eventual decision on a redesigned uniform would only be made after extensive stakeholder consultations and in the best interest of both the scheme and the nation.
