Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to become Germany’s next head coach, with reports indicating that Julian Nagelsmann is set to leave the role following the national team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. German tabloid Bild reported that Nagelsmann was offered a €7 million severance package after a meeting with officials of the German Football Association (DFB), despite having a contract that runs until 2028.
Nagelsmann has faced intense criticism after Germany suffered a shock Round of 32 elimination to Paraguay on penalties, marking the country’s third consecutive early World Cup exit. Following the defeat, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced an immediate review into the team’s poor performance, with a final decision on the coach’s future expected in the coming days. Several German media outlets, including Sky Germany and Süddeutsche Zeitung, have identified Klopp as the overwhelming favourite to take over the national team.
Klopp stepped away from club management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and currently serves as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, overseeing the company’s international football operations. Although he has never managed a national team, his successful spells with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool have made him one of Germany’s most respected coaches. If appointed, Klopp would be tasked with rebuilding the four-time world champions ahead of future international competitions and restoring confidence after another disappointing World Cup campaign.
