Former presidential spokesman Femi Adesina has attributed Nigeria’s long-standing socio-economic difficulties to decades of poor leadership rather than a lack of resources. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari argued that the country’s abundant human and natural resources have been undermined by ineffective governance, resulting in persistent poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment.
Adesina maintained that Nigeria’s challenges did not begin with the administration of former President Buhari, insisting that the country’s problems had accumulated over many years due to poor policy decisions and weak leadership. While acknowledging that Buhari’s government faced criticism over economic hardship and insecurity, he said successive administrations have all contributed to the nation’s current situation and stressed that genuine transformation requires visionary and accountable leadership.
He urged current and future leaders to prioritise national development over personal interests, emphasising that sustainable progress depends on sound governance, effective institutions and policies that improve the welfare of citizens. Adesina expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its socio-economic challenges if leaders remain committed to responsible governance and long-term reforms.
