A female student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has alleged that a soldier assaulted her during the invasion of students’ hostels by military personnel from the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo. Speaking in an emotional video, the student, identified simply as Ademola, said she was alone in her room preparing a meal when the soldiers arrived. She alleged that after forcing her to open the door, one of the soldiers pinned her against her bathroom door, told her not to scream, and made sexually suggestive remarks before she pleaded with him to stop.
The allegation follows Monday night’s reported invasion of student hostels, during which several students were allegedly assaulted and more than 60 mobile phones and other valuables were taken. Witnesses also claimed that some female students were stripped naked and forced to dance unclothed by soldiers believed to have participated in the Army Depot’s recent passing-out parade. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among students, rights groups and members of the public, with calls for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.
The Nigerian Army has since confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the allegations, promising to establish the facts surrounding the incident and take appropriate action if any personnel are found culpable. University authorities and concerned stakeholders have also demanded justice for the affected students while urging security agencies to ensure such incidents do not recur.
