The Presidency has accused Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew of orchestrating an elaborate impersonation and forgery scheme, alleging that he forged an appointment letter purportedly issued by the Office of the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and falsely presented himself as the Director-General of a non-existent agency known as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council. According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Adeyemi was arrested by the police on October 27, 2025, following a petition submitted by Gbajabiamila to security agencies over the alleged fraud.
The Presidency said police investigations uncovered that Adeyemi operated 34 bank accounts, including nine accounts allegedly opened in the names of fictitious government agencies, which investigators believe were used to facilitate the scheme. Authorities also alleged that he used forged documents bearing fake signatures, official seals and reference numbers to deceive foreign diplomats, government officials and members of the public into believing he headed a legitimate presidential body. Adeyemi has since been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on an eight-count criminal charge bordering on forgery, impersonation and related offences.
The Presidency reiterated that the so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council does not exist and urged the public, diplomatic missions and government institutions to disregard any correspondence or appointments linked to the organisation. It also reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting individuals who impersonate government officials or create fake agencies to defraud unsuspecting victims, stressing that the case remains before the court.
