The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a three-week suspension of its Kajola–Apapa (BAT) passenger train service to allow for scheduled maintenance of locomotives and coaches. According to NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the temporary suspension will begin on July 6, 2026, and services are expected to resume on July 27, 2026.
Passengers intending to use the service have been informed that the last train before the suspension will operate on July 3. The maintenance exercise is aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, and passenger comfort by ensuring that rolling stock remains in optimal condition.
The NRC clarified that the suspension affects only the Kajola–Apapa passenger service and will not impact freight operations to and from the Apapa Port Complex or other rail terminals on both the narrow-gauge and standard-gauge networks. Cargo services will continue normally throughout the maintenance period.
To reduce inconvenience for commuters, the corporation advised passengers to utilize its Lagos Mass Transit Train (LMTT) services, which operate on weekdays between Ijoko, Kajola, and Iddo. Morning services depart Ijoko at 6:30 a.m. and Kajola at 7:00 a.m. for Iddo, while return services leave Iddo at 5:30 p.m. for Ijoko and 6:15 p.m. for Kajola.
The NRC apologized for the temporary disruption and assured passengers that the maintenance work is necessary to improve the reliability and safety of rail transportation on the corridor.
