The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has cautioned motorists against driving against the flow of traffic commonly known as “one-way” driving on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following severe traffic congestion caused by heavy rainfall. The warning came after flooding on sections of the highway led some drivers to ignore traffic regulations in an attempt to bypass gridlock.
Speaking on the development, Ogun State Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi urged road users to remain patient, obey traffic rules, and reduce their speed despite the delays. He stressed that driving against traffic only worsens congestion and significantly increases the risk of fatal crashes, injuries, and damage to property. FRSC officials, alongside other traffic management agencies, have been deployed along the corridor to restore normal traffic flow and maintain order.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is Nigeria’s busiest highway and has witnessed several accidents linked to reckless one-way driving. Road safety advocates have repeatedly warned that the practice creates dangerous situations for motorists, pedestrians, and emergency responders. Earlier in the year, FRSC announced that offenders caught driving against traffic on the expressway could face penalties regardless of their status or affiliation.
Authorities are therefore appealing to commuters to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid shortcuts that endanger lives. The FRSC emphasized that patience and adherence to traffic regulations remain the safest way to navigate periods of heavy congestion, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
