The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has publicly destroyed 12,233.946 kilograms (about 12.23 tonnes) of assorted illicit narcotics and psychotropic substances seized during intelligence-led operations across Kano State and at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The exercise was carried out as part of the agency’s ongoing War Against Drug Abuse campaign.
According to the NDLEA, the destroyed drugs were confiscated through targeted raids, investigations, and enforcement operations conducted across the state. The destruction was supervised by the Kano State Commander, CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, who said the exercise demonstrates the agency’s commitment to ensuring that seized drugs do not find their way back into circulation.
The command disclosed that since January 2026, it has arrested 904 suspects—comprising 869 males and 35 females—seized more than 2.5 tonnes of illicit substances, and secured over 54 convictions. Some convicted offenders reportedly received prison sentences of up to 15 years, underscoring the agency’s efforts to ensure that drug-related arrests lead to successful prosecutions.
Speaking at the event, Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking. He stated that enforcement efforts would be complemented by rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives, including support for treatment centres and youth-focused intervention programmes. Authorities described the destruction exercise as a significant step in protecting communities from the dangers associated with illicit drug use and trafficking.
