
\n\nVice President Kashim Shettima has directed relevant ministries, agencies, and emergency management authorities to intensify flood preparedness efforts following warnings of increased rainfall and possible flooding across several states.
The directive comes amid forecasts indicating that many communities may experience above-normal rainfall during the peak of the rainy season. The Vice President emphasized the need for early intervention to reduce the impact of flooding on lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.
He instructed federal agencies responsible for disaster management, water resources, environment, agriculture, and humanitarian affairs to strengthen coordination with state governments in implementing preventive measures. These include clearing drainage systems, sensitizing vulnerable communities, monitoring river levels, and preparing emergency response teams for rapid deployment where necessary.
Shettima noted that flooding has continued to pose significant challenges to food production, transportation, housing, and economic activities in several parts of the country. He stressed that proactive planning would be more effective and less costly than responding after disasters occur.
The Vice President also urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert, heed official warnings, and cooperate with emergency agencies whenever evacuation becomes necessary. He encouraged state governments to identify high-risk communities and establish temporary shelters capable of accommodating displaced persons if required.
Emergency management officials have assured Nigerians that contingency plans are being reviewed while relief materials are being positioned in strategic locations to ensure timely response should flooding occur.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through improved disaster preparedness, while calling on citizens to avoid practices such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, which often contributes to urban flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
