Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has alleged that forces within the Federal Government are making efforts to prevent him from appearing on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking at a leadership programme organised by the NextGen Mentorship and Leadership Initiative at Madonna University, Okija, Obi claimed that significant moves were being made behind the scenes to frustrate his political ambitions but insisted that he remains undeterred.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the obstacles being placed before him have only strengthened his determination to continue his political journey. Obi told participants that he is focused on achieving his vision for Nigeria rather than being distracted by challenges, adding that leadership often requires perseverance in the face of adversity. He maintained that those attempting to stop him would ultimately fail and urged young Nigerians not to allow setbacks to discourage them from pursuing their goals.

Obi also used the occasion to challenge all prospective presidential contenders, including President Bola Tinubu, to a public debate on their plans for the country. He argued that Nigerians deserve to hear concrete policy proposals from those seeking leadership positions and said elections should be driven by ideas and competence rather than ethnicity, religion, or political patronage. He encouraged citizens, particularly young people, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and actively participate in the democratic process.

Reacting to recent legal setbacks affecting his political platform, Obi said the challenges would not derail his ambitions or commitment to democratic principles. He emphasized that his aspiration is rooted in a desire to see Nigeria function effectively and create opportunities for all citizens regardless of background. The remarks come amid growing political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and ruling party leaders increasingly positioning themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
