Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Benin–Abraka Road, rescuing several passengers after armed criminals reportedly ambushed travellers on the busy highway. The swift intervention by security personnel prevented what could have become another major abduction incident on one of the state’s critical transport routes. Authorities said officers responded immediately after receiving distress information about suspicious armed men attempting to intercept vehicles and whisk passengers into nearby bushes.
According to police sources, the kidnappers had positioned themselves along the road and attempted to force vehicles to stop before security operatives arrived at the scene. A gun battle reportedly ensued, forcing the suspects to abandon their operation and flee into surrounding forests. The rescued passengers escaped unharmed, while officers cleared the area and restored normal traffic movement. Police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and intensified patrols along major highways considered vulnerable to criminal attacks.
The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved in the operation, describing their response as a demonstration of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. Security agencies have increasingly relied on intelligence-led patrols, rapid-response teams, and coordinated operations to counter kidnapping syndicates that have targeted motorists across Edo State and neighbouring regions. Recent operations have also led to the rescue of several abducted passengers and the arrest of suspected members of kidnapping gangs operating along major highways.
The latest rescue comes amid growing concerns over highway insecurity in parts of southern Nigeria, where kidnappers have increasingly targeted commercial buses, private vehicles, and long-distance travellers. Security experts have urged continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities, noting that timely intelligence and rapid deployment remain crucial in preventing abductions. Residents and motorists have also been advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security authorities as efforts continue to dismantle criminal networks operating along major roads.
