The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State chapter, has maintained that public schools across the state will remain shut until the government takes decisive steps to guarantee the safety of teachers and students following the abduction of over 40 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. The union said the killing of two teachers and the continued captivity of abducted victims have heightened fear and anxiety within the education sector, forcing parents to withdraw some children from school and leaving teachers psychologically unfit to return to classrooms.
NUT Secretary, Olukayode Salami, stated that the union’s decision to suspend academic activities was driven by worsening insecurity and the need to protect lives. He stressed that schools would only reopen after the safe rescue of those still in captivity and the implementation of effective security measures to prevent future attacks. The union also called for increased patrols in vulnerable communities, improved intelligence gathering, and the establishment of joint security task forces involving conventional security agencies, hunters and vigilante groups.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral social media video claiming that the abducted teachers and pupils were transported to Kaduna State by helicopter. Authorities described the footage as misleading and urged the public to rely on verified information as efforts continue to secure the release of the victims and restore confidence in the state’s education system.
