\n\nPresident Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate strengthening of security around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, following a deadly attack on the institution’s perimeter that claimed the lives of two soldiers and a police officer.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited the institute on behalf of the president, announced that emergency security measures had been activated and ordered NIPSS management to work with the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to improve protection around the facility.
The government has requested a comprehensive security reinforcement plan covering surveillance systems, personnel deployment, access control, and emergency response measures within 72 hours. Shettima also assured the families of the fallen security personnel that their sacrifices would not be forgotten, promising government support for their welfare.
The attack occurred on June 15 when gunmen stormed the institute in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area, leading to a gun battle with security operatives stationed at the facility. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in Plateau State, where several communities have recently suffered deadly attacks.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang approved additional security measures around NIPSS, including the creation of a buffer zone and installation of security lights to improve surveillance. The institute’s Director-General, Ayo Omotayo, described the attack as a warning about the vulnerability of critical national institutions and called for more security personnel and advanced surveillance equipment to prevent future incidents.
