Several people have reportedly been killed in Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon, less than a day after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a new ceasefire aimed at ending months of escalating hostilities. According to Lebanon’s state news agency, at least 11 people died after Israeli warplanes, drones, and artillery targeted more than a dozen locations, with many strikes concentrated around the city of Nabatieh.
The Israeli military said the attacks were carried out against what it described as Hezbollah “terrorist targets” after the Iran-backed group launched more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. Israeli officials said their forces would continue responding to immediate threats despite the ceasefire arrangement.
The renewed violence has raised concerns in Washington that continued military operations could undermine broader diplomatic efforts, including a US-backed peace agreement with Iran that calls for an end to fighting across the region. US officials have warned that tensions between Israel and Lebanon could derail efforts to maintain stability.
The conflict has already caused widespread destruction in southern Lebanon, with around one million people displaced and several communities severely damaged. Hezbollah has vowed to continue its attacks if Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces domestic pressure to maintain military action against the group.
