A fire outbreak on Thursday engulfed part of a multi-storey building housing a branch of Polaris Bank on Broad Street, Lagos Island, prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. The blaze occurred around 11:33 a.m. on the third floor of the 17-storey building, which is also used as a parking facility. Firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene and successfully contained the incident before it could spread to other sections of the structure.
According to the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, the fire originated from a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor. Emergency crews from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu fire stations responded immediately after receiving the distress call and worked to bring the situation under control. Authorities confirmed that the fire was extinguished without affecting the rest of the building.
Officials reported that the only significant damage was limited to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings. No deaths or injuries were recorded, a development that has been widely welcomed given the building’s location in the busy commercial district of Lagos Island. Videos circulating online showed thick smoke billowing from the structure as residents, workers, and business operators watched emergency responders battle the blaze.
While the immediate danger has been eliminated, authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Investigations are expected to continue in the coming days to establish what triggered the incident and whether additional safety measures are required. The swift response by firefighters prevented what could have become a far more serious disaster in one of Lagos’ busiest business hubs.
