The Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda has escalated sharply, with confirmed infections rising to 894 cases and the death toll reaching 204, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Health officials have described the outbreak as one of the most severe Ebola emergencies recorded at such an early stage, raising concerns about its potential to become one of the deadliest in recent history.
The outbreak is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Most cases have been recorded in eastern DR Congo, particularly in Ituri Province, though infections have also spread into North Kivu, South Kivu, and neighboring Uganda. Uganda has reported a smaller number of cases, but health authorities remain concerned about cross-border transmission and the movement of people between affected areas.
Containment efforts have been complicated by insecurity, population displacement, difficult terrain, and challenges in tracing contacts of infected individuals. Africa CDC officials say only a fraction of the estimated contacts linked to confirmed cases have been successfully monitored, making it harder to break chains of transmission. Medical teams are also grappling with shortages of personnel, equipment, and funding needed to sustain response operations.
International health agencies have intensified their response as the crisis grows. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently activated $107 million in emergency funding, while the World Health Organization and Africa CDC continue coordinating containment efforts. Despite more than $900 million in pledged support, less than 10 percent of the promised funds has been disbursed, prompting urgent calls for donors to accelerate assistance before the outbreak spreads further.
