\n\nOyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has confirmed that a lieutenant of the Nigerian Army was killed during efforts to rescue schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking to protesters in Ibadan, the governor said the officer died during an ongoing operation to secure the release of the victims, who were kidnapped during attacks on schools in Ahoro-Dada, Yawota and Esiele communities on May 15.
Makinde described the loss as evidence of the risks faced by security personnel involved in the rescue mission and assured residents that security agencies were continuing efforts to free the captives while avoiding further casualties.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to securing the victims’ release, insisting that Oyo State would not allow the incident to become a prolonged tragedy. The abduction has sparked widespread concern, with parents, teachers and civil society groups demanding stronger action to rescue those still in captivity.
