At least 11 soldiers and 22 terrorists were killed during a deadly attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger, in the early hours of Thursday.
According to a preliminary report by Niger’s military government, two civilians also lost their lives in the assault, which triggered explosions and heavy gunfire around the airport area.
Security forces reportedly repelled the attackers and launched operations to track down fleeing militants. The assailants abandoned weapons as they retreated from the scene.
Authorities sealed off the airport area and placed the capital on high alert following the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Niger continues to face persistent security challenges from armed extremist groups operating across the Sahel region, despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring stability.
