\n\nIran has announced that former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, more than four months after his death in Israeli and U.S. airstrikes. Funeral ceremonies will begin in Tehran on July 4, continue in the holy city of Qom on July 7, and conclude with his burial in Mashhad.
Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed on February 28, 2026, in strikes that marked a major turning point in the country’s history. His death triggered a leadership transition, with his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeding him as supreme leader in March.
Iranian state media said the funeral was delayed due to the conflict that followed Khamenei’s death. The ceremonies are expected to draw millions of mourners as the country marks the end of one of the longest and most influential leadership eras in the Islamic Republic.
