The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 After Hijrah. The announcement was made through a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, who called on residents to use the occasion for prayers, reflection, and renewed commitment to peace and development in the state. The work-free day applies to public institutions across Borno, including government offices, schools, and other state-owned establishments.
According to the government, the holiday is intended to give Muslims an opportunity to observe the significance of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah—the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. Governor Babagana Zulum urged residents to pray for lasting peace, security, and economic progress, especially as Borno continues its recovery from years of insurgency and humanitarian challenges. The governor also encouraged citizens to remain united and support ongoing efforts aimed at rebuilding communities affected by conflict.
