Security operatives in Sokoto State have successfully foiled a major bandit attack, killing three suspected gunmen during a fierce gun battle and preventing what authorities described as a potentially devastating assault on local communities. The operation was carried out by a joint team of police tactical units and other security agencies following intelligence reports of an impending attack by heavily armed criminals. The swift intervention helped avert further loss of lives and property in the affected area.
According to security sources, the bandits launched the attack under the cover of darkness and attempted to overrun the community before encountering resistance from security personnel. A fierce exchange of gunfire followed, during which three of the attackers were neutralised. Several other suspects reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and fled into nearby forests. Security operatives subsequently recovered weapons and other items believed to have been used during the operation.
The Sokoto State Police Command commended the courage and professionalism displayed by officers involved in the operation, noting that the successful mission reflected improved coordination among security agencies in the state. Authorities also disclosed that surveillance and manhunt operations have been intensified in surrounding forests and border communities to track down fleeing members of the criminal gang and prevent possible retaliatory attacks.
The latest security success comes amid ongoing efforts to curb banditry and cattle rustling across Sokoto and other northwestern states. In recent months, security forces have increased offensive operations against criminal groups operating in forests along the Sokoto-Zamfara axis, leading to several arrests, recoveries of rustled livestock, and the disruption of bandit hideouts. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies as authorities intensify efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the region.
