The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed deep concern over what it described as credible reports of increasing killings, kidnappings, sexual violence, and forced conversions affecting Christian and other religious minority communities in Nigeria. In a statement released on Monday, the UN warned that worsening insecurity, particularly in the northern and Middle Belt regions, has created an environment where armed groups continue to operate with devastating consequences for civilians.
According to the UN human rights office, the persistent wave of attacks has displaced thousands of people and heightened fears among vulnerable communities. The organisation stressed that the Nigerian authorities have a responsibility under international human rights law to protect all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity and called for thorough investigations into reported abuses. The warning comes amid a recent surge in mass abductions and violent attacks across several states, including the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oyo and Borno, which has drawn widespread local and international condemnation.
