President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country will never surrender to terrorism, banditry, or any form of criminal violence, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to defeating those threatening the nation’s peace and democratic values. In his Democracy Day message, the President said the resilience of Nigerians and the sacrifices made by the nation’s democratic heroes would continue to inspire the government’s determination to protect lives, preserve freedom, and strengthen the country’s institutions.
Tinubu noted that despite the security challenges facing parts of the country, including recent mass abductions and attacks on communities, his administration remains focused on restoring lasting peace. He praised the efforts of the Armed Forces, the Police, and other security agencies, describing their sacrifices as vital to the nation’s stability. According to the President, ongoing investments in intelligence gathering, military operations, and security reforms are aimed at ensuring that criminal groups have no safe haven anywhere in Nigeria.
The President also linked the country’s fight against insecurity to the preservation of democracy, stressing that the ideals of June 12 represent courage, unity, and the collective determination of Nigerians to overcome adversity. He said Democracy Day serves as an opportunity to honour the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices helped entrench democratic governance in the country. Tinubu added that the Federal Government would continue strengthening democratic institutions while implementing reforms designed to improve national development and public confidence.
The remarks come at a time when the nation is grappling with heightened security concerns following recent attacks in Oyo, Borno, and other parts of the country. The Federal Government has already lined up a series of activities to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, including a presidential address to a joint session of the National Assembly, special prayers, public lectures, and youth-focused programmes. Officials say the events are intended not only to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey but also to reaffirm the country’s resolve to remain united in the face of terrorism, banditry, and other threats to national security.
