The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the party’s leadership openly declaring its determination to remove the ruling Peoples Democratic Party from power in the state. Speaking during the ratification and presentation of party candidates for various elective offices, the Oyo NDC Chairman, Mrs Oyeronke Akinlolu, urged members to unite and work tirelessly toward securing victory at the polls. 
Akinlolu stressed that the party’s ambition could only become reality through discipline, grassroots mobilisation, and commitment from members across all local governments in the state. She encouraged supporters to obtain and safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the elections, reminding them that political change would only be possible through active participation in the electoral process. The event, which was monitored by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, also featured the formal unveiling of the party’s governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and state assembly candidates. 
Among the candidates presented was Akeem Ademola Yusuf, who emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election. Yusuf promised what he described as “focused and dispassionate leadership,” insisting that Oyo residents were demanding a new direction in governance. He identified insecurity, youth unemployment, and poor social infrastructure as some of the major issues his administration would prioritise if elected governor. Yusuf specifically referenced the recent attacks and kidnappings in Oriire Local Government Area as evidence that rural security in Oyo State requires urgent attention. 
The declaration by the NDC reflects the increasingly competitive political atmosphere building up in Oyo State ahead of 2027. Governor Seyi Makinde’s PDP administration continues facing growing pressure from opposition parties including the APC, SDP, and newer political coalitions seeking to capitalise on economic hardship and security concerns in the state. Analysts believe the emergence of multiple opposition movements and coalition talks could make the next Oyo governorship election one of the most fiercely contested in recent years, especially as Makinde prepares to complete his final term in office.
