Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has described officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government as “foolhardy,” insisting that even ordinary civilians would have resisted and defeated any attempt to seize power unlawfully. Musa made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Friday while reacting to the ongoing court martial of military officers linked to the alleged October 2025 coup plot. 
According to the Defence Minister, the alleged conspirators lacked direction and recklessly dragged inexperienced junior officers into what he called a doomed and senseless operation. Musa said he was disappointed by the calibre of individuals allegedly involved in the plot, stressing that democracy remains far superior to military rule and that Nigerians no longer have any appetite for unconstitutional takeovers. He added that many of the junior officers now facing trial appeared to have been manipulated by more senior figures behind the conspiracy. 
Musa also defended the military’s handling of the investigation, insisting that the court martial process remains transparent and in line with due process. He stated that all accused persons are being given full opportunities to defend themselves while authorities continue to follow legal procedures. The minister further argued that the alleged coup had no justification, claiming that the armed forces had been well supported under the current administration through improved welfare packages, salaries, and operational funding. 
The alleged coup plot first surfaced in late 2025 after intelligence reports led to the arrest of several military officers, including senior personnel accused of planning to overthrow the Tinubu administration. Initial reports were publicly denied by security authorities before the military later confirmed that suspects would face trial before a court martial. The controversy generated widespread national debate over security, military loyalty, and democratic stability in Nigeria, especially amid rising political tension and growing opposition activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
