The Peoples Democratic Party has officially adopted former Cross River senator and ex-governorship candidate, Sandy Onor, as its sole consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The announcement was made on Tuesday during a major stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where party leaders declared that the PDP had regained internal stability and was ready to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress for power. 
Chairman of the PDP Presidential Primary Election Committee, Samuel Ortom, announced the decision after consultations reportedly conducted across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. According to Ortom, the party unanimously agreed to adopt Onor as its consensus candidate, arguing that the move would help prevent internal divisions and strengthen the PDP ahead of the election. Party National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman also described the adoption as proof that the PDP remained Nigeria’s strongest opposition platform despite recent defections and internal crises. 
Speaking after his adoption, Onor declared that the PDP remained the only opposition party truly capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027. The former senator also took subtle swipes at opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, suggesting that fragmented opposition politics could once again benefit the ruling party if major political actors fail to unite. He pledged to focus his campaign on national unity, economic recovery, security reforms, and restoring public confidence in governance. 
Onor’s emergence comes amid an increasingly crowded and complex political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku Abubakar is currently leading the ADC presidential race, Peter Obi recently emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while President Tinubu continues consolidating support within the APC following presidential primary victories across several states. Political analysts believe the PDP’s decision to adopt a consensus candidate reflects attempts to avoid the damaging internal disputes that weakened the party in previous elections.
